The formation flying in Russia (USSR), dates since the creation of the Air Force after the communist revolution. On every parade on Red Square or some airfield, planes from different types performing flypasses. But the real one first aerobatic team is established in the beginning on 30th years of the 20th century and receives Red Five name. They fly on five I-16 airplanes. Because of its painting, excluding leaders plane who painted in olive green, all other four planes painted in red, they receive this name. They displayed just simple maneuvers in formation and performed rarely, just once or twice a year - on Red Square parade and on Tushino (near Moscow) air parade.
After the World War II, again Soviet aerobatic teams performed simple maneuvers in formation and again just on these events. These planes formations include different count of planes in different groups. Planes that were used are Yak-15, MiG-15 and MiG-21, in red painted upper-surface and unpainted bottom-surface in natural aluminum, and MiG-17, MiG-19, but painted in blue-grey at the bottom . Planes used fumes mounted on the bottom of the fuselage to enhance the performing maneuvers. The demonstration is simple, including mostly fly-pasts and formation loops, but not barrel rolls, in about 15 minutes. Exclude I-16 team Red Five, no other Soviet team has named, despite that in the West they have. Most of these demonstration planes are from 176th air regiment based on Toplii Stan airfield near Moscow. Later in 1950 this unit becoming 234th air regiment and in 1952 they moved to its present Kubinka airbase. In 1989 this air regiment becoming 237th air regiment and in 1992 become 237th Guards Proskurov Aircraft Demonstration Centre.
The last air parade in Soviet Union is on Domodedovo airfield in 1967.
